I waited to hear his truck turn around before I switched off the porch light and went into the house. I was unbuttoning my blouse as I walked, tired and ready for bed.
Something was wrong.
I stopped in the middle of the living room. I looked around me.
Everything looked all right, didn't it?
Yes. Everything was in its proper place.
It was the smell.
It was a sort of penny smell.
A coppery smell, sharp and salty.
The smell of blood.

I'd been waiting for the vampire for years when he walked into the bar. Ever since vampires came out of the coffin (as they laughingly put it) two years ago, I'd hoped one would come to Bon Temps. We had all the other minorities in our little town—why not the newest, the legally recognized undead? But rural northern Louisiana wasn’t too tempting to vampires, apparently; on the other hand, New Orleans was a real center for them—the whole Anne Rice thing, right?

Monday morning and the hall is crowded with hot, sticky bodies. Mmm...just like home. And then I feel it. That itch in my sixth sense. Gabriel.

I swing my locker shut, turn, and there he is, leaning against the wall next to room 616, talking to Frannie. And she's smiling up at him and laughing—and flirting—and blushing.
That bastard's cheating!

Suddenly, I'm flooded with some unrecognizable emotion mixed with rage, and all I want is Gabriel's bloody head in my hands. Except angels don't bleed even when you rip there heads off.

The slave owner was not impressed. He was already launching the next whiplash, and it stuck Elena across the cheek and simultaneously opened a great gap in her thin summer top, slicing through her camisole and scoring the flesh underneath. As she gasped, the tail of the whip cut through her jeans as if denim were butter.

Tears formed involuntarily in Elena’s eyes, but she ignored them. She had managed not to make a sound other then that initial gasp. And she still stood exactly where she had first landed in protection. Elena could feel the wind whip at her tattered blouse, while her untouched veil waved behind her, as if to protect the poor slave who had collapsed against the ruined cart.

I don’t know if he took a step forward or if I did, but we were suddenly standing so close, Justin’s lips inches from mine. He smelled sweet, like sweat. I knew that his heart was still pumping quickly and his blood was running through his veins faster than usual. I wished I could stop these calculated, vampire thoughts, but as they say, old habits die hard.

When I awoke, I immediately felt a cold surface on my left cheek. An icy shiver rushed down my spine. Even with my eyes closed, I knew I was naked, stomach down on a hardwood floor.

I gasped, though my throat was so dry I made an unearthly animal sound. Three heaving breaths, then a thump-thump, thump-thump--a heartbeat. My heartbeat? It could have been ten thousand fluttering wings. I tried to open my eyes, but with each blink there was a flash of blinding light. Then another. And another.
